While every season we dip into our archives to see what fashion looked like 20 years ago, it turns out there’s deep lore attached to the spring 2007 shows . Nicolas Ghesquière gave us robot leggings at Balenciaga , Alexander McQueen presented his gothic floral dresses, and Christopher Kane had his fluorescent debut, among other runway delights.
The designer roster was stacked on this particular walk down memory lane: Christophe Decarnin was in at Balmain , Peter Dundas at Emanuel Ungaro , Bella Freud at Biba , Jean Paul Gaultier at Hermès , Clare Waight Keller at Pringle of Scotland , Tomas Maier at Bottega Veneta , Stefano Pilati at Saint Laurent , and Raf Simons at Jil Sander , to name just a few notable appointments.
Trendwise, there was a lot of pantsless dressing balanced by ever-present prep (see Ralph Lauren , Paul Smith , and, surprisingly, Dsquared2 ); a fascination with tech (see Chalayan ’s crystal morphing pieces, Versace ’s dress in C-3PO gold metal, and Narciso Rodriguez ’s armorlike molded bustier); hyper-romanticism ( Roberto Cavalli , Rodarte ), some sportiness ( Y-3, DKNY ) and ’40s and ’80s nostalgia. Gucci celebrated 85 years, Jean Paul Gaultier 30. Overall, this was a season to remember.
