Star Wars Watch Order: Films, Series and Animation

Star Wars spans the nine-part Skywalker saga, standalone films, live-action series and long-running animation. First-timers should start with release order and A New Hope (1977); switch to story timeline for a chronological rewatch, and use the format filters to narrow the list.

Frequently asked questions

Where should a first-time viewer start?

Start with A New Hope (1977) and watch the original trilogy before the prequels, i.e. release order. The big reveals were paced for release order, and watching the prequels first spoils them. This page defaults to that order.

How do I filter films vs series vs animation?

Use the format filters above the list: 'Film' leaves 12 theatrical titles, 'Live-action' covers the Mandalorian-Andor line of shows, and 'Animation' covers long runs like The Clone Wars. Filtering changes only what you see, not your saved progress.

What is the Skywalker saga mode?

It keeps only Episodes I-IX, the core nine films, roughly 20 hours total. Standalones, series and animation are hidden, which suits viewers who just want the main film storyline.

Do I have to watch all 133 episodes of The Clone Wars?

No. A common approach is the pilot film plus a curated episode list, focusing on the Ahsoka and Maul arcs and the final season. Season 7 leads straight into Revenge of the Sith and is the most essential.

Is Visions canon?

No. Visions is a Lucasfilm-sanctioned anthology where studios reimagine Star Wars freely, so it sits at the end of the timeline view for reference. The Tales of anthologies are canon but individual episodes span different eras.

Where does the data come from and how current is it?

The list is hand-maintained and updated as titles release. Film runtimes are theatrical cuts and series runtimes are whole-season estimates; chronology follows official sources and fan consensus, with disputed placements flagged. This page is a viewing reference, not affiliated with Lucasfilm or Disney.
